A New & Improved Macauley Vampire Series

Have you seen the new covers for A Time Apart and Keeper of My Soul?

It's a departure from the original tone I set out to achieve when I launched them, but after talking with a handful of book bloggers who read each and reviewed them, I realized maybe my marketing didn't quite match up to expectations. The thing that surprised me most was that people seemed shocked I didn't focus more on William since the books are, after all, the Macauley Vampire Series.

Ultimately, after several conversations with some people whose ideas and input I value greatly, I came up with a whole new launch plan. My audience for these books has been so small that I don't feel bad trying to capture more interest. Keep your fingers crossed I can make a splash and that others fall in love with William and Olivia as much as my current fans already have.

(PS: I debated whether or not to even write this post, but I'm a big proponent of transparency and while it might make me look like an eejit to have launched a series one way only to rebrand it a year later, this whole world of indie publishing operates on a huge learning curve, and what I know now is miles and miles ahead of what I did when I started. Basically, please be kind. I'm an evolution in progress.)

It's Finally Here: Keeper of My Soul!

Whew! This one was a long time coming, no?

After a year and a handful of months, the long-awaited sequel to A Time Apart: Book One of the Macauley Vampire Series has finally arrived.

Olivia Donnelly is having one hell of a year. First she discovered vampires are real, then she found out a whole lot more than she bargained for about reincarnation, and now that she’s joined the undead she is quickly coming to learn there’s a whole lot more to William Macauley’s world than meets the eye. As Olivia struggles to adapt to this new life, an old madness long dormant in their bloodline re-emerges, bringing with it an unexplained power that courses through her veins unchecked. Faced with danger from old enemies and whispers of an ancient prophecy, William and Olivia are forced to battle not only her internal demons, but other vampires who threaten their very lives. Can their immortal love conquer all or will it lead to their destruction?

Are you as excited by this as I am? I certainly hope so. Now ... go buy it!

Rewrites ...

I probably shouldn't be surprised that I'm on my third re-write of the sequel to A Time Apart when that book went through no fewer than six different iterations. Since I wrote the majority of the first draft of part two - what I've been calling Blood of My Blood - at the same time as I finished up ATA, it very much felt like a continuation of William and Olivia's story, but as I read through it, there was something missing. It lacked direction. It felt like it could just as easily been cut down significantly and then included in ATA. Not good. So I brainstormed and came up with an idea and moved forward from there. I liked the direction. I was excited by the story arc and the evolution of the characters. And then I read it and realized that I had major plot holes to work through. Oops. So I did another re-write and thought I had something good. I sent it off to my beta readers and they both liked it, but when I went through the exiting process to fine tune it, I felt like something was missing. Drama. Danger. Excitement. Good story, yes, but it needed oomph. The romance was still there but it didn't feel quite so fraught. So I amped it up and wow. The additions really blew the lid off the story. The problem? It completely overshadowed my intended ending. So, I've been working on that for the last couple of weeks, going through and tightening up plot holes that I inadvertently introduced with these kapow! moments, and making sure that everything - new additions and subtractions - weaved a tight story. I'm kind of blown away by where it's ended up. I just sent it off to an author friend who writes paranormal and suspense romance novels to get her take on the direction I've gone with it and I'm hoping she'll love it as much as I do.

Oh, and I might be changing title too. Go big or go home, right?
